Mona Shindy is a retired Royal Australian Navy officer who gained recognition for her work as a technical naval warfare specialist and for her advocacy for diversity and inclusion in the military. She was born in Egypt and migrated to Australia with her family when she was seven years old. Shindy joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1989 after completing a degree in engineering, specializing in electronics and communications. She served in various roles in the navy, including as a weapons engineer, combat systems manager, and technical director.
Shindy rose to prominence in 2014 when she became the first Muslim woman to be appointed as a commander in the Australian Defence Force. In 2015, she was awarded the prestigious Telstra New South Wales Business Women's Award in recognition of her leadership and innovation. She retired from the navy in 2019 after 30 years of service but continued to be involved in advocacy work. In 2020, she was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Sydney Institute for Marine Science, which aims to promote and advance the study of marine science in Australia. Shindy is also a frequent public speaker and commentator on issues related to defence, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace.
